Michael Carrick is ready to admit that he’s not at his best yet – but it was more than encouraging that he scored in his first start since recovering from injury.

The 27-year-old Englishman scored the second, very important goal against Hull at the end of a fine counter-attack but his overall display wasn’t the sharpest so there’s room for improvement with tough away games coming up.

‘It was nice to score and get off the mark,’ he told the Manchester Evening News.

‘It was the longest I have played in three months, so hopefully that is going to get my fitness up ready for the coming weeks.’

And with Hargreaves and Scholes out we need him badly, even though Fletcher is in fine form.
