The season has started well for Chris Smalling.

The youngster has impressed at right-back playing for United and has also grabbed that first England camp, also at right back.

But Smalling, although expressing a happiness to fill-in at right back, does still see himself as a centre back, as he explains,

“At the minute I`m needed to do a job at right-back, although the aim is to go on and challenge Rio Ferdinand.”

“To be playing in a different position for United and England is obviously hard and I`m learning with each game.”

“But hopefully, in years to come, I`ll have many games at centre-back because that`s where I see my position and that`s where my future lies.”

“I see this as a temporary thing, although I`m happy to play where both managers want me as long as I`m playing.”

With such fierce competition, at United, for the centre back roles with Ferdinand, Vidic, Evan and Jones, could Smalling become a world class right-back almost by default?
