Wigan chairman Dave Whelan talks up his manager: he believes Steve Bruce is one of the leading candidates to replace Sir Alex Ferguson should the boss call it a day any time soon.

The two sides meet on Sunday, with little on stake, only a Premier League title. It’s obvious that whatever the outcome will be, Wigan can be happy with their achievement as they looked doomed at some point in the season. No wonder Dave Whelan likes his manager right now.

‘I wondered how Steve was going to pull us round, the way we were playing when he arrived, but he has proved himself the most important guy in the whole club.’

‘Another European title and Fergie may decide he’s had enough. If United come in for Steve, I couldn’t contemplate standing in his way.’

Well, it’s really generous Mr. Whelan. But I think you needn’t worry. Brucey is a legend who will always be loved at Old Trafford – but so is Bryan Robson and not a single Red in his right mind would want him to take over!

The big Geordie has done remarkably well at Wigan and we can be thankful for taking off points Liverpool, Arsenal and most importantly Chelsea. But you don’t have the feeling that he’s suited for such a job. Queiroz, Hughes and even Roy Keane are surely ahead of him in the queue.
