Manchester United`s defence of the League Cup they won last season, ended in dramatic fashion at Ashton Gate last night.

With a place in the semi-finals of the competition up for grabs, United became the fourth Premier League side of the competition to be knocked out by Bristol City, following in the footsteps of Watford, Stoke City and Crystal Palace.

After a goal-less first-half, the game sprang into life in the fifty-first minute when Joe Bryan gave the home side the lead with a shot across the face of the goal that nestled in the top corner of the net beating Sergio Romero.

However, United`s response was good with Zlatan Ibrahimovic equalising just seven minutes later when his low free-kick beat Luke Steele in the Bristol City goal.

Manchester United had chances to win the game but were denied by a combination of good goalkeeping by Luke Steele and also the woodwork.

With the game deep into stoppage time and looking as if it was heading to extra-time, Bristol City scored, when in the final minute of stoppage time Korey Smith turned in the box and his finish was good enough to send the Bristol City support into raptures.

Jose Mourinho made ten changes for this fixture but, in all honesty the side that he put out was more than capable of beating Bristol City who now march on to a semi-final meeting, over two-legs, with our neighbours Manchester City.
