The club can still surprise us… and it seems Carlos Queiroz considers it a priority to collect as many Portuguese-speaking players as possible.

A virtually unknown Brazilian, the club revealed, was signed in January and now he’s been given a squad number: the 34 vacated by the now Stoke City player Ryan Shawcross.

The new boy’s name is Rodrigo Possebon, he’s right-footed and turns 19 in a week’s time. He is, to quote the club’s official website, ‘a tall, athletic holding midfielder’.

Patrick Vieira springs to my mind as the one who fits this description but a Brazilian? Gilberto Silva is the only classy Brazilian holding player of the last two decades…

But seeing Anderson excelling in the midfield, even as a defensive midfielder, has softened my thoughts about Brazilian defensive players. He might even be good in that role. Let’s hope he’s not the new Djemba-Djemba…
