United travel to Birmingham with Ferguson considering putting Owen Hargreaves on the bench.

The England international, signed from Bayern Munich this summer, was restricted to only three appearances due to knee and thigh problems. He played very well in each of those games so his return would be most welcome.

A place in the starting eleven is totally out of the question but it’s possible he will get a place on the bench. The big question will be whether Saha or Tevez (or Rooney though I think that’s unlikely) will accompany him there as United’s substitute striker.

It looks certain that none who played on Wednesday will retain their place in the starting line-up, with Nani having the most chance of it. He’s expected to start on the bench as Fergie will surely opt for Ronaldo and Giggs on the wings.

Gary Neville is still some matches away from a return and therefore he’s not even in the travelling squad. He should play in the reserves against Liverpool.

Steve Bruce’s side have their own problems: ex-Real Madrid midfielder Borja Oubina is likely to be out for the whole season with a knee ligament injury. Mikael Forssell is definitely out, too, as he needs surgery on his hernia problem.
