This mystifies me. We allowed Ruud van Nistelrooy to go, now fair enough once you fall foul of Sir Alex Ferguson, there is never a way back, but according to Wayne Rooney the Reds have now lost the best finisher at Old Trafford to Newcastle United as Italy Under-21 international Giuseppe Rossi travels north on loan.

Rooney says of the 19-year-old “Giuseppe is a great player and one to watch out for. I have seen him every day in training and he has really impressed me. His touch, feel of the ball and awareness are nothing short of brilliant. He is perhaps the best finisher at Manchester United and he will only get better. I have talked to the likes of Michael Carrick and Joe Cole about the way Glenn Roeder brought them through at West Ham. The feeling at Old Trafford is that Giuseppe is in good hands with Newcastle.”

In July we reported Rossi had signed an extension to his contract which will keep him at Old Trafford until 2010. Rossi, the US born but Italian (er?) striker has started just six games so far in the first team though definitely one for the future. Sir Alex said at the time: ‘We are delighted that he has signed a new contract He represents the future of the club’

Rossi added: ‘It is great to have extended my contract with the best team in the world. I just hope to keep progressing and developing my career.’

The striker has certainly outgrown the reserves and needs regular first team football, it will be fascinating to see how he gets on at Newcastle this season, but I can’t help but feel sorry we aren’t going to see him more this season at the Theatre of Dreams.
