United aim to delay the exploratory surgery on Dimitar Berbatov’s knee until the end of the season. The Bulgarian forward has been carrying the problem for a while now but he’ll play through the pain until May – that is the plan, anyway.

‘If we could see it through until the end of the season it would be better,’ Sir Alex said. ‘The advice was to have an exploratory operation but Dimitar wants to play through it.

‘Sometimes he feels it and sometimes he doesn’t. Maybe the climate helped but he didn’t feel it when we went away, so he trained every day. It is a difficult one and if he is feeling okay it is not a problem. But if he is keeps continually coming up against a problem we would have to make a decision on it.’

But is it worth it? Not many remember it now but Berbatov actually looked quite good at the start of the season but he’s been playing within himself ever since returning from the Bulgarian team after becoming their all-time top scorer. Right now he’s not feeling any pain but it’s been obviously affecting his performances in the last few months.

But you can hardly blame him for wanting to play, of course: the next 5 months could represent his final chance to make it at United.
