The big news of the week was Sir Alex Ferguson labelling Rafa Benitez arrogant. ‘Tis all part of the mind games, they say, and it might be an attempt at them but essentially, it is correct: the FSW, so often perceived as humble and gentlemanly, is actually one of the most arrogant managers out there.

‘Benitez said Everton are a small club, which just points to his arrogance,’ said Ferguson.

‘But it is one thing to show the arrogance he did. What you cannot forgive is the contempt for Sam Allardyce last week when Liverpool scored the second goal.

‘I don’t think Sam deserved that. He is a guy who has worked so hard for the LMA, looking after young players.

‘He had a weakened team and to get that kind of contempt… I don’t think any other Liverpool manager would have done that. It was beyond the pale.’

Allardyce was apparently offended by how Benitez waved his arm after the second goal last week, indicating the game was over. It could be interpreted otherwise but that wouldn’t change the fact that ‘Rafa’ is actually as arrogant as it gets.

Not quite the Jose Mourinho way, of course, but in a more sneaky manner: his rant in January showed that, the way he got carried away by some good performances. Or remember how he was telling everyone how to beat United, instead of concentrating on his own team? And there’s the ‘small club’ thing: I think only Arsene Wenger complained more times about the negativity of their opponents than Benitez.

But if we beat Liverpool to this title it will be all the sweeter thanks to the earlier gloating and crowing of the FSW.
