One of the more intriguing sights offered up by the television companies during the coverage of England v France were those of Wayne Rooney as a spectator cheering his compatriots on.

Rooney, serving a two game suspension picked up for a red-card against Montenegro, kicked and headed every ball and leapt to his feet in joy when Lescott headed England in front.

Unfortunately, Rooney will not be available for selection until the last game of the group stages, against the Ukraine, by which time England`s qualification for the knockout stages might be more or less assured.

Steven Gerrard, captaining England in these finals, has given an insight into how Wayne is and welcoming him back into the starting eleven, by remarking to the media,

“Wayne feels fine. He`s frustrated and I know he`s regretting doing what he did against Montenegro.”

“But he`s coping well and he`s itching to get out and show what he can do for us.”

“Any team would miss Wayne Rooney. He`s a world class player and he`s been one of the best players in the Premier League this season.”

“We`re hoping he can be in with a good chance of qualifying when he comes back – he can be the difference for us in that third game.”

Continuing with the appraisal theme, the new England manager, Roy Hodgson, also spoke about Rooney predicting bright things when he does return to the starting eleven, commenting to the same gang of media hacks,

“Wayne Rooney should be our real ace in the hole. He is very fit and raring to go.”

“Wayne really can`t wait to get on the field. And if he can play like Wayne Rooney, we`re going to be a bit more difficult to beat for some of these teams.”

“You can only benefit from having someone of his quality in your team.”

Let`s hope that is the case and that the entrance of Wayne into the tournament doesn`t end in a damp squib!
