I really should have known better. Trawling through NewsNow today I saw that Stan Collymore’s column was about our Champions League semi-final against Arsenal, with the title ‘Why I think Arsenal will shoot down Manchester United’.

I must admit I became interested even though it being Stan Collymore and in the Mirror I really should have known better, as I said. Still, I was interested in his arguments because it’s a brave thing to back Arsenal after their woeful Old Trafford showing, considering the lack of an away goal as well.

However, the headline was actually misleading: there was no ‘why’. The closest thing to a reason behind his opinion was this: ‘United should have been 2-0 up within 30 minutes and I fancy Arsenal to turn things round.’

Sorry Stan but that’s not enough for a newspaper column. Opinion is all right, it makes the world go round but it’s interesting only when one provides a few points about why one holds that particular opinion.

I’d be glad to jump to the conclusion that he simply couldn’t be bothered to come up with reasons but sadly, I think the case is that he’s not intelligent enough… which is no great surprise, obviously, considering the way his playing career unfolded.

Oh, by the way, Arsenal CAN knock us out, of course. It can happen. Hopefully it won’t, though.
