While Jamie Carragher is nowhere near the superman Liverpool fans usually claim him to be, he’s an honest guy who is a realist. He is one of those born and bred Scousers who can be taken seriously.

After United beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield with that O’Shea goal, to the question ‘what Liverpool need to challenge for the title?’ Carragher coolly responded: ‘better players’. And once again he revealed that he’s got a touch of realism that eludes most of his fellows.

‘I’m not a great believer in being lucky or unlucky. I’m a big believer in ‘you get what you deserve’.

‘United over the last few years have probably edged it with us and small details in football make a difference.’

‘That’s why they’ve been better than us and that’s something we need to liven up.’

What would Benitez say? That they controlled the game and created chances. He always says that, even when they most obviously don’t. But at least his number one defender is a realist.
