Yesterday we reported on how Manchester United were set to reward three of their present squad with new contracts on the back of some decent performances this season.

One of those players was Chris Smalling.

Smalling is amongst a select band who have just over a year to go on their current contracts and this morning speculation is rife that the young defender could be the subject of a bid from another club, with that club being none other than our big rivals Arsenal.

Recently, Smalling has formed what looks like a more than steady central defensive partnership with Phil Jones, but it would appear that Arsenal could well be banking on the possibility that any contract talks between Smalling and Manchester united come to an abrupt halt.

If that were the case they`re, quite probably, hoping that Manchester United would decide to sell Smalling rather than lose him for nothing come the end of his contract a the end of the 2015 / 2016 season.

Keep hoping Arsene, it just isn`t going to happen!
