Yesterday we questioned the ethics of telling a tube passenger that Rio`s international career was over before Rio had been told himself.

Naturally Rio was more than just a little miffed and it now seems that Roy Hodgson realises the enormity of his error and is trying to back-track.

However, it seems that getting hold of Rio proved a little elusive yesterday and Hodgson was forced to leave a voicemail message for Rio.

Backtracking and trying to recover the situation in the media, Hodgson is reported as now having commented,

“I`m very disappointed that my travelling on the Tube train and suggesting Rio`s career is over to a passing punter has been recorded as it has.”

“I respect the man and I respect the player. But if I called him it would be to play in the team. Not to be just part of the squad.”

“I am looking forward. Rio didn`t feature in my plans for the Euros and since then the players I`ve used have done well for me and I`m sticking with those players.”

“I`m trying to rejuvenate the squad.”

But surely a friendly call wouldn`t have been too much to expect would it Roy?
