The selecao lost their first game in the Copa America but second half substitute Anderson showed his class.

Mexico scored two goals within five minutes to push Brazil to the edge of disaster. They were unimaginative, slow and scrappy so something dramatic had to be done.

Step forward Anderson of Porto. The guy who will join United this summer has been brought on a substitute and stamped his authority on the game.

Brazil were much better in that second half, creating numerous chances and spurning them all, with Anderson himself guilty in missing probably the greatest one. The defeat seemed inevitable and indeed they lost.

But of course it hardly matters for us, unless you’re a United fan supporting Brazil. Anderson’s performance, however, gave us plenty of reasons for optimism.

His full international debut means that persuading the committe to grant him a work permit will be much easier – just send them a tape of this display. Hopefully he’s not too downhearted about the defeat.

I wonder now whether Dunga will put him into the starting line-up next time?
