Knowing his background, I`d suggest that participating in the Europa League isn`t something Jose Mourinho finds attractive.

Having won the Champions League, Mourinho knows that is where the kudos is Jose will be keen to get Manchester United back into that competition as soon as practically possible.

Hopefully the failure of Louis van Gaal to secure that top-four position in the Premier League that would have seen Manchester United compete in Europe`s premier competition, cost the Dutchman his job.

Talking about United`s absence from the competition, Mourinho feels that the Champions League will suffer as much as Manchester United, with Jose quoted as having remarked to the Sun,

“Manchester United has to be in the Champions League.

“The Champions League is empty when Manchester United is not there.

“I like to establish difficult directives.

“I don`t like to go to the players and say ‘Let`s finish top four` or ‘ Let`s try to do well.

“Let`s try to win every game. A big club like us must have this mentality.”

The secret is, as Liverpool have found out over the years, make sure that any absence from the Premier League is for just one season, a failure to end the absence (as Liverpool found out) can have far-reaching effects. No team has a God-given right to be in the Champions League, it is something that has to be earned.

Continuing, in his joust with the media, Jose went on to discuss the job he knows he has to do at Old Trafford, further adding,

“I know I have a big mountain to climb or a long marathon to run but I`m comfortable and I`m happy with it.

“This is the job I have. This is the team I have.

“I don`t dream. I just try to do the best I can and see what the future has for me.”

It promises to be an interesting season and with the squad boosted by a multitude of world-class signings, the future looks bright for both Manchester United and Jose Mourinho.
