The dust has settled and United are in the Carling Cup final, but Sir Alex looks back on a tough semi-final and gives praise to a chip off the old block.

Rovers’ Brad Friedel almost proved United’s undoing but Ferguson said it was the doggedness of his old Man Utd war-horse that lives on his Blackburn players that almost did the trick.

Ferguson: ‘Friedel was fantastic. Three of his saves were world class. He kept them in the game, no question about that. On the last four occasions we have played them he must have made 40 saves against us.

‘They did not give up and why should they because they are a mirror of their manager. They make the referee work and they make you work.

‘They are just a difficult side to play against because they have some very competitive, aggressive players, but they are also a good side.’
