Manchester United eased into the next round of the Carling Cup with a comfortable victory over gallant Aldershot.
Team News – Following that result, on Sunday, Sir Alex Ferguson chose to make 11 changes to the line-up that started on that dreadful afternoon.
United – Amos, Fabio, Vidic, Jones, Fryers, Park, Cleverley, Valencia, Owen, Berbatov, Diouf
Subs – De Gea, Vermijl, Keane, Pogba, Morrison, Cole, Keane
First Half – United got the action underway at a packed Recreation Ground and created the first chance just before the ten minute mark when Cleverley fired over after being set-up by Berbatov.
Seconds later Vidic received a yellow card for a foul on Rodman. But United were soon to go ahead when Park exchanged passes with Cleverley before providing Berbatov with the perfect opportunity to net. The Bulgarian, making his 100th appearance for United, made no mistake.
Aldershot 0 United 1 (Berbatov – 15 mins)
United were taking the game to their hosts and Berbatov had a penalty appeal waved away when he looked to be pushed over on the edge of the box. Still looking to push Aldershot onto the back foot, Fabio was unlucky with a shot that took a deflection and ended up the wrong side of the post.
Aldershot responded with a decent effort from McGlashan who saw his shot rise and clear the bar. As half time approached both Berbatov and Diouf went close with headers with Valencia providing a wicked cross for the second of those two chances.
As half time approached though United doubled their lead when Berbatov set up Owen and the striker, making his second start of the season, beat the keeper for his third goal in the Carling Cup this season.
Aldershot 0 United 2 (Owen – 41 mins)
Half Time – Aldershot 0 United 2
Second Half – United, with the second half started by our hosts, didn`t take long to put the game well and truly out of their reach with a third goal and it was the best of the three so far when Cleverley fed Antonio and he crashed a twenty-five yard shot past the keeper.
Aldershot 0 United 3 (Valencia – 48 mins)
Berbatov had a great chance to get his second of the night, but cutting back, when clean through, was to prove costly as his shot went wide.
Three goals to the good, United were controlling matters. Sir Alex aware that the game was won gave match time to Pogba, Morrison and Keane. Berbatov, looking sharp, forced Warner, in the home goal, to make a decent save from a well struck free kick.
With time running out Aldershot almost got a consolation goal but Gutteridge saw his effort, from the edge of the box, go wide. Gutteridge, persistent to the last, then saw Amos deny him a chance of getting on the score-sheet with a decent save from a free kick.
