According to Sir Alex Ferguson, Alan Smith will be returned to his rightful place – up front – when he returns to action after his awful leg break that he suffered v Liverpool last season.

Ferguson had experimented with the 25-year-old former Leeds striker playing him in midfield with the hope that he could be the long term replacement for Roy Keane, but now the £7million signing will be put back up front to score goals!

Ferguson said:

‘We are going to convert Alan Smith back into being a centre forward,’ said Ferguson.

‘He will be back in training soon and should be available by the end of August or the beginning of September.

‘We have Louis Saha and Wayne Rooney and we are considering Giuseppe Rossi with us, even though I would prefer him to go out on loan for six months.’

No Ruud van Nistelrooy in that list then! I can’t see Smith taking much ‘converting’ I’m sure he will come back as hungry as ever and be raring to prove what he can do.
