Last night, in Amsterdam, Ajax’s splendid run in the Champions League came to an end.

After beating Real Madrid and Juventus in earlier rounds, Ajax suffered the heartache of going out on away goals, at the hands of Tottenham, with the decisive goal coming deep into stoppage time.

One of the stars of what was an epic European journey was their young 19-year-old defender Matthijs de Ligt.

Although still a teenager, the cultured defender already captains Ajax but his future, probably like so many others at the club now, lies elsewhere.

Manchester United had been seen as one possible destination, with the teenager tipped to fill that defensive void we’ve been trying to fill for a couple of years now.

However, according to two separate sources, the Daily Mail and the Daily Star the defender, rated in the £60 million bracket, has turned down a move to Old Trafford.

Instead, according to the news vehicle, ESPN, de Ligt is deep in discussion with Barcelona although our source does point out that the Catalan club still have a lot of work to do to clinch the deal.

Perhaps there is a slight glimmer of hope that the deal could go wrong and United could enter the race to sign a central defender destined to be a world star.
