The subject of a ‘winter break` has always been a prickly subject.

Although it is a practice adopted by several European countries, I`ve always thought that predicting when to take a break in this country would be nigh on impossible.

Sods-law says that if a two week break were to be announced for January then the resumption of the season would be held up by the one spell of really bad weather we get each winter. It, quite clearly, would be a lottery.

But several clubs are still clamoring for such a break, ours included, insisting that it would give players time to rest and recover sufficiently for that sprint to the finish of the season.

Now that point makes perfect sense and such talk could see a move to take a winter break move forwards, until, that is, one leading tabloid quite rightly points out that several clubs, including ours, do very little to support such a claim when they conduct a pre-season tour (ahead of this season) that will see the squad fly something in the region of 22,000 miles, to fulfill the desire to grow the global brand.

There`s also the inference, from numerous parties, that a ‘winter break` would only serve to provide the Premier League clubs with a chance to jet off for a couple of lucrative friendly fixtures.

An own goal all round I fear!
