Earlier this week we reported on the suggestion that Louis van Gaal had identified the Croatian striker, Mario Mandzukic, as a summer signing.

The suggestion was being bandied about that the 29-year old, who has scored 20 times in 37 games for Atletico Madrid, wanted a move after being left on the bench several times last season.

However, it appears that United have a serious rival for Mandzukic with the Italian outfit, Juventus, set to make a bold move for the player.

A source at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, in detailing the situation, has remarked,

“Atletico are expecting Juventus to make a bid soon. They have already been told Juve want to do a deal.”

The grapevine suggests Juventus have offered Atletico £20 million but that the Spanish club are holding out for £25 million.

But, perhaps the key pointer to the fact that this could be a deal slipping away from Manchester United is that Mandzukic`s representatives have already been in contact with Juventus about a move.
