Many United supporters suspected that when Sir Alex Ferguson brought Nick Powell to the club, he might possibly spend a year out on loan.

But that hasn`t proven to be the case, in fact Powell looks as if he could play a part in our chase for honours this season.

He may not play on a regular basis but, following on from his performance as a substitute on Saturday, it looks very much as if he`ll not let us down and could, with his silky skills, provide an alternative option when things are not quite working out.

Speaking about the youngster, who doesn`t turn 19 for a few months yet, Sir Alex has remarked,

“Nick Powell is going to be a good player who, we hope, will fill Paul Scholes` boots in terms of he`s got terrific vision, good temperament, two great feet, is quick and strikes the ball well.”

Now they would certainly be big boots to fill.

But what did young Nick make of Saturday?

Talking to the media following the fixture, the former Crewe youngster had this to say,

“When I first came on it scared me as I`m only used to 5,000 people now and then, but it`s a great atmosphere.”

“It`s nice to make my debut. To then cap it off with a goal is what I`ve been working for.”

“I learn every day, especially from the midfielders, Scholes, Carrick Giggsy, they`re great, they`ve all won trophies.”

Providing Powell can stay clear of serious injury and that he continues to progress in the manner in which he currently is then Powell looks to have a golden future.
