Edwin van der Sar had been blamed by many for coming out too late at Chelsea’s winner in the FA Cup final. Now, he’s paid back some debt…

United won the Community Shield on penalties after Edwin saved three spot-kicks in a row – improving his own record in shootouts and exacting revenge at the same time.

‘It’s a great feeling,’ van der Sar told Sky Sports.

‘It’s a little revenge for the cup final and also gives us a boost before the start of the league. I’ve never saved three penalties in a row.’

‘I was 5-2 down on penalty shootouts during my career, so this makes it 5-3,’ the 36-year-old said.

‘I think we deserved the win – we played the better football and created more chances than them. Chelsea only had the one chance at the end of the first half.’

Yes, I quite agree with him. And you? I’d still like to ask him if he had though of the shootout of the semi-final of Euro 2000, against Italy – the darkest day of Dutch penalty-takers…
