The prospect of Robin van Persie joining Man United is growing it seems and Wayne Rooney is keen on this.

Rooney admits that van Persie is a player he “admires” and would welcome at Old Trafford but knows it’s down to Sir Alex Ferguson and the United board to make this happen and it’s their decision to decide just how lethal he could be for the club.

He does though have little doubts that they could strike up a “deadly partnership”, yet also knows there’s already plenty of quality among the striking ranks with competition already hotly contested: ‘I’d like to think so – but you’d have to ask the manager about that.

‘There’s a lot of forwards here already with myself, Welbeck, Chicharito and Berbatov, who’s still here.

‘So there’s a lot of forwards fighting for a place.’

Rooney and van Persie leading the line for United does seem quite a formidable pairing that would terrify premier league defences, the coming days should clarify if this is going to happen or not…
