Being Cristiano Ronaldo is an enviable lot for most of the time. He earns a shitload of money, he can get quality birds and he’s playing for his ‘boyhood favourites’. But right now I wouldn’t want to be Ronaldo.

Just imagine the scene: you come off the pitch disconsolately, having scored your side’s only goal in a Champions League game and by all accounts having looked the only player who actually gave a crap, contemplating failure of the monumental type. Because Real Madrid, for the sixth season in a row, failed to make it past the last 16 of the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has surely learnt that his former team destroyed AC Milan, scoring seven goals over the two games. And they can’t dismiss Milan: no one in their right mind would say that Lyon are better and of course Madrid registered a draw and a home loss against Milan in this season’s group stage.

So, Ronaldo must feel really stupid, just like Real Madrid president Florentino Perez who spent roughly 300 million pounds for yet another failed attempt to get past the last 16. And Lyon knocked them out, Lyon who finished third in the French league last season, who were put to the sword by Barcelona at the same stage a year ago.

You have to be wondering whether Ronaldo secrectly wishes if he could still be a part of Manchester United instead. We frequently had to deal with the accusation of being a one-man team – but for Madrid it looks like that even Ronaldo’s superhuman efforts are insufficient.

Oh, and the funniest part: the final will be held at the Bernabeu. Delicious.
