Manchester United are reportedly lining up a £12 million bid for Lyon midfielder Mahamadou Diarra.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is still looking for a long term replacement of former skipper Roy Keane who acrimoniously left the club last year and the Daily Mirror reports that targeted Diarra has been identified to fill that role.

But Ferguson, who has bolstered his defence with the recent signings of Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, believes the summer is the best time to bring his major targets to Old Trafford.

He said: ‘The best options are the ones we had in the summer. We’ve got one or two major targets. You can never be confident , but we know who we want and we’ll go for them.’
